Encouraging Active Lifestyles

One of the most important, but often neglected things that a parent can do for a child is to encourage them in the area of fitness. It is, honestly, an area in which a lot of parents drop the ball. The saddest thing about the situation is that when most kids are exposed to exercise and fitness in a fun light, they tend to enjoy it and stick with it. There is an epidemic of out of shape kids in this country and it's such a shame because playing outside and exercising can be genuinely fun.

One of the best ways for a child to both get a workout and have fun is to play on playground equipment. Whether at a school or at a park, taking a kid to a playground to play with his or her friends can be an amazing experience for all of the children involved. Not only are there physical perks to playing on a playground, there are mental bonuses as well.

Kids who spend time at playgrounds will develop quite a few skills that will help them later in life. Physically, the results are obvious. Children who play at playgrounds will typically be in better shape than those who don't. A very often overlooked benefit of letting children play at a playground is that they will learn to use their imaginations. What appears to be a simple tube to an adult can be a fortress or a spaceship to a child. So often, kids who aren't able to play outside in playgrounds with other kids lose the ability to effectively use their imaginations. Video games and television provide the kids with all of the images they can handle, and as such, no room is left in a child's mind to develop images of his or her own.

Playgrounds also teach children about things like confidence and leadership. Most people can remember how confident they felt the first time they crossed the monkey bars or the first time they managed to run up the slide. These things are remembered not because they are monumental events, but because of how great it feels to accomplish a goal, no matter how large or small. In addition, kids also learn about virtues like leadership and creativity through the games they play with friends on playgrounds.

Playgrounds are an essential part of growing up. Playing on playground equipment is great for building many great traits in children, but playgrounds are getting harder and harder to find. Most people do not realize how important it is for their children to play outside with other children, but it is so important, for both physical and mental health.
