One of the most important, but often neglected things that a parent can do for a child is to encourage them in the area of fitness. It is, honestly, an area in which a lot of parents drop the ball. The saddest thing about the situation is that when most kids are exposed to exercise and fitness in a fun light, they tend to enjoy it and stick with it. There is an epidemic of out of shape kids in this country and it's such a shame because playing outside and exercising can be genuinely fun.

Kids and Sugar

American kids (and adults) consume way too much sugar. According to the American Heart Association, toddlers are getting 12 teaspoons (tsp.) of sugar per day compared to the recommended 4 tsp., school-aged children are consuming 21 tsp instead of the recommended 3 tsp, and teens are getting up to 34 tsp instead of the recommended 5 to 8 tsp. That's a lot of sugar! Think about it. A 20 ounce bottle of Crush soda can contain 83 grams of sugar. That's almost 21 teaspoons of sugar in one drink!

Does sugar impact our ability or our child's ability to concentrate? Does it have an affect on hyperactivity? Does it increase irritability or effect mood? Does it rev us up and the make us sluggish?

The importance of living a healthy lifestyle for maintaining general good health and preventing chronic diseases has been well established. A healthy lifestyle is quite simple to achieve - one does not need to do anything "crazy" to adopt a healthy lifestyle. I will say that a certain amount of independent thinking is required to separate truth from fiction in most modern health advice currently being delivered.

The most important thing you can do is eat well. Avoid toxins in your food as much as possible and consume plenty of fresh fruit, veggies and whole grains; exercise moderately a few times per week; avoid smoking, including secondhand smoke; and avoid gaining too much weight (which should come naturally if you eat right and exercise).
